What Is Alcohol Use Disorder?

Alcohol Use Disorder is a medical condition characterized by the inability to control or stop drinking despite negative consequences. It can range from mild to severe and often develops gradually over time.

AUD is a chronic brain disorder marked by compulsive alcohol use, loss of control over drinking, and negative emotional states when not using.

Common Symptoms of Alcohol Use Disorder

  • Drinking more or longer than intended
  • Strong cravings or urges to drink
  • Failed attempts to cut down or stop
  • Neglecting responsibilities at work, school, or home
  • Continuing to drink despite health, relationship, or legal problems
  • Needing more alcohol to feel the same effects (tolerance)
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when alcohol use is reduced or stopped

What Is Alcohol Withdrawal?

Withdrawal occurs when your body has become dependent on alcohol and reacts when you stop drinking. It can range from uncomfortable to dangerous.

Symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal May Include:

  • Anxiety or restlessness
  • Shaking or tremors
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sweating and rapid heartbeat
  • Headache or insomnia
  • Seizures or confusion (in severe cases)

Can I Detox from Alcohol at Home?

In some cases, yes — but it must be medically supervised. At H.A.R.T., we only offer in-home alcohol withdrawal management to clients assessed as low to moderate risk. If appropriate, we provide:
  • Medical oversight and symptom monitoring
  • Medications to manage withdrawal symptoms
  • In-home nurse visits (if needed)
  • 24/7 support and emergency planning
  • Seamless transition into therapeutic care
If you’re not a candidate for at-home detox, we’ll refer you to a higher level of care and re-engage once it’s safe to continue at home.

Our In-Home Alcohol Treatment Includes:

  • Clinical assessment and care plan
  • In-home or virtual therapy (CBT, trauma-informed, etc.)
  • Peer recovery coaching
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), when appropriate
  • Family therapy (optional)
  • Weekly check-ins and progress tracking
  • Long-term relapse prevention planning
